The power of thought is the most potent ingredient in getting what you want. Whether it’s a Michelin-star meal or a simple cheese sandwich, Cosmic Ordering will deliver to your table, as Deborah Durbin finds out

You would be forgiven for thinking that Cosmic Ordering is something dreamed up by a hip and happening motivational guru. However, before Cosmic Ordering became the new buzz word, more than 80 years ago a gentle lady by the name of Florence Scovel Shinn wrote a book which detailed how, by having a positive attitude and by sending your desires and intentions out into the Universe through prescribed visualisation techniques, you could create the life you always wanted.

Born in New Jersey on 24th September 1871, Florence was an American artist and teacher of metaphysics, which is a branch of philosophy that seeks to explain the fundamental nature of existence and the Universe. Educated at the Pensylvania Academy of Fine Arts, she settled in New York to work as an illustrator for children’s magazines.

It was there that Florence’s passion for metaphysical philosophy led her to investigate why some people appeared to attract nothing but bad luck and others seemed to lead a charmed life. From personal research and study, Florence made the discoveries that inspired her to write her first book, The Game of Life and How to Play It, which is about how by changing your mind set and approach to life, the natural law of metaphysics helps you to create and lead the life you really want. In 1925, Florence’s revolutionary discoveries were too early for their time and the American publishing industry, not yet ready to receive something as harebrained as the Law of Attraction, rejected Florence’s book proposal. Undeterred, Florence used her own funds to self-publish the book. It became an instant international bestseller and continues to appear in bookshops today.

So what exactly is Cosmic Ordering?
In short, Cosmic Ordering works hand in hand with the Law of Attraction. It is based on the power of thought and intention; ‘what you believe, so you will receive’. If you believe that you are worthless and consistently unlucky in love, then this belief will define your reality. If, on the other hand, you believe that you deserve an abundance of success and good fortune, then – you guessed it – this is what you will manifest in your life.

As a practice, Cosmic Ordering is easy and comes naturally to most. Simply spend some time thinking about what it is that you really want in your life. If it is something specific, then be precise with your details. Don’t be afraid of farfetched ideas, either. If it’s a manor house in the country that you’re after, then this is what you’ll get. Once you have decided exactly what you want, write it down. Don’t limit yourself; you can create an endless list of everything that you want in your life. The Universe knows no bounds, so be boundless with your requests. When you have completed your list, simply ask the Universe to deliver it. And now forget about it. Trust that the Universe is doing its job and will respond to your request in good time.

The Law of Attraction through history
Although the Law of Attraction and Cosmic Ordering appear to be relatively new turns of phrase, the principles that govern these phenomena have been around since time began. The Bible (Luke 11.9) states, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” The original term ‘Law of Attraction’ is believed to have first appeared in The New York Times in 1879. However, it wasn’t until Thomas Troward, a 19th century New Thought writer, wrote about and delivered lectures on the Law of Attraction’s principles that it really started to influence people’s thinking. Troward was credited as one of the influences in Rhonda Byrne’s celebrated book and DVD, The Secret.

Troward influenced many other New Thought writers. In 1906, William Walker’s Thought Vibration or The Law of Attraction in the Thought World describes how our thoughts, positive or negative, can affect the physical reality of our lives. This book was shortly followed by the very successful The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Wattles, which highlights the Hindu principles of the Law of Attraction in that God can deliver everything we ask of him. In 1937, Napoleon Hill published his bestselling book Think and Grow Rich, which has sold over 60 million copies. Hill’s book consistently refers to his ‘secret to success’, which is based on the principle of our thoughts creating our reality. By the 1900s, many authors including Florence Scovel Shinn, had detailed new and improved versions of how to apply the Law of Attraction and positive thinking.

A modern look at an old belief
Cosmic Ordering has received ample coverage in the media recently, with celebrities such as Noel Edmonds, Jonathon Cainer, Michelle Knight, Rhonda Bryne and the late Barbel Mohr revealing how this apparently magical system has miraculously changed their lives. From its introduction in Florence’s books, the basic principles of Cosmic Ordering have been rewritten and modernised many times over in response to the shifting times and increasing social strains.

Noel Edmonds
Radio One DJ and TV presenter Noel Edmonds credits the Cosmic Ordering system with reinventing his career and providing him with the luxuries that many of us believe we can only dream of. Once famous for his hilarious interactions with the cult figure Mr Blobby in his hit show Noel’s House Party, Noel’s TV career plummeted in 1999 when he famously fell out with the BBC. Around the same time, his marriage of 20 years collapsed. Having read Barbel Mohr’s self-help book The Cosmic Ordering Service, Noel set about creating the life he really wanted. His success resulted in him writing his own book on the subject, Positively Happy – Cosmic Ways to Change Your Life.

Mr Edmonds is now back on our screens with several new TV shows, including the popular Deal or No Deal. He has remarried, has a house with a staggering 29 bedrooms and claims he has never been happier. More recently he added a modern twist to the principles of Cosmic Ordering by creating an iPhone app, where users can register and place their own Cosmic Orders and keep a record of what happens as a result. He says of Cosmic Ordering, “The cosmos won’t, indeed it can’t, assist you unless you adhere to the three basic rules of Cosmic Ordering, the most important of which is belief in yourself and your right to be successful.”

Barbel Mohr
The late Barbel Mohr, who passed away last October, is considered to be one of the most influential authors and speakers on Cosmic Ordering in the 21st century. Barbel became a bestselling author and household name when she printed her short booklet The Cosmic Ordering Service and distributed it amongst friends and family. Barbel stumbled across the principles of Cosmic Ordering after arguing with a friend about possible ways to find an ideal man. Her friend suggested she place an order for one, just as you would with a mail order catalogue. Barbel found herself taking on the challenge, if only to prove her friend wrong, and set a date for her dream guy to arrive. She was blown away when the day arrived and her ideal man, who later became her husband, appeared. She decided to write about it in a booklet, which she photocopied and passed on to others. It was partly thanks to Noel Edmonds, who happened to come across a copy of her booklet, that Barbel became an international success. Her book has since been translated into 14 different languages and has sold and continues to sell millions of copies worldwide.

In her book, Barbel states that Cosmic Ordering really is very simple; you can learn to call on the cosmos to change your life and realise your dreams. Simply decide what it is you want, announce to the Universe that it’s your intention to get it, set a date to get it and it is delivered to you. If you’re looking for your ideal job, perfect partner, or a solution to your money and health issues, then your prayers can, and will, be answered.

Rhonda Byrne
More recently, the motivational speaker and author Rhonda Byrne used Law of Attraction principles and Cosmic Ordering as the basis of her hugely successful book The Secret, and its sequel The Power, to convince us that the Law of Attraction is at our disposal. Rhonda stumbled upon ‘The Secret’ in 2004 when she was at a really low point in her life. Her father had died suddenly, she was in financial dire straits and was, as she puts it, “an emotional and physical wreck”. It was really only when Rhonda’s daughter gave her a copy of The Science of Getting Rich; a book about how to attract money into your life, that she discovered a way to turn her life around. And turn her life around she did, in a most spectacular way.

Rhonda set about gathering as much information as she could about the Law of Attraction and decided to record her findings. The result was a short DVD called The Secret, which sold over two million copies worldwide. The material from the film was then made into a book with the same title, which has sold over four million copies to date. In a recent interview on Oprah, Rhonda said, “If you follow its philosophy, you can create the life you want – whether that means getting out of debt, finding a more fulfilling job or even falling in love.” She maintains that even the most unhappy experiences are still a gift for which we should be grateful. If she hadn’t hit rock bottom, she may never have discovered the potential of ordering the life she really wanted.

So how does it work?
Florence says in her introduction to The Game of Life and How to Play It, “Most people consider life a battle, but it is not a battle, it is a game.” She also states that, “Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” In other words, whatever thoughts we send out into the world, whether they be good or bad, they will be returned to us in some form or other that reflects their nature. It follows then that if you are constantly thinking you are worthless and undeserving, this is how others will see and treat you. If you think that you are worthy of love, success and abundance, then this is what will materialise in your life.

This is a belief that is shared by many authors on the subject. Rhonda Byrne says that “the Law of Attraction is the most powerful law in the Universe. Without exception, every human being has the ability to transform any weakness or suffering into strength, power, perfect peace, health and abundance. Visualise and ask for only good things to happen and they will. Focus on the negatives in your life and you will only attract more negatives into your life.” Florence Scovel Shinn’s advice some 86 years ago still holds true today: think of what it is you desire most, ask for it, and you shall receive it.

Putting it into practice
Place an order
Although Florence was a great believer in God, you do not need to be religious or believe in anything other than your own power for Cosmic Ordering to work. On a piece of paper, write a wish list of what you really want in life. This could be anything from a material possession such as a new car, a new home or a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes, to meeting your soulmate, having better health, or finding a more fulfilling job with a more compassionate boss. Always write your list of wishes in the present tense, and instead of writing ‘I want’, write ‘I have’. For example, I have a brand new BMW 3 Series, or I have met my ideal soulmate, or I have perfect eyesight. There is absolutely no limit to the amount of things you can request, so spend some time really thinking of what it is that you want most in your life.

Now comes the most important part of Cosmic Ordering: don’t think about how your dreams and desires will materialise. If you think that it will never happen, or start to wonder how on Earth you will ever have enough money to buy that brand new Mini, you will send this doubt into the Universe, which will cancel your Cosmic Order. Remember, you always create what you wish for. Just accept that your wishes will be granted in the best way possible. Once you are happy with your list, declare out loud a date before which you want your ‘orders’ to be fulfilled. Now sit back, relax and let the Universe take

Putting it into practice
A vision board
Another excellent way of manifesting what you most desire is to create your own vision board. A vision board is simply a sheet of paper or card on which you stick cut-out pictures, inspirational words and anything else that represents your wishes and dreams. If you want to lose a few pounds, find an image of someone who is roughly the target weight you wish to be and add it to your vision board. If you want to meet your soulmate, write a list of the qualities that your ideal partner would have. If you want to start a business, cut out pictures from magazines of what your premises will look like or a made-up bank statement of your profits. The human brain reacts well to visuals, and the images on your vision board will enter your subconscious, making your brain believe that your desired life has already manifested as a reality.
